… warns farmers, communities
The Development Authority of the Sokoto Rima River Basin (SRRBDA) has alerted the farmers and communities that live along the Rima Basin Basin downstream to be cautious after the largest release of water in the Gorko dam in the state of Sokoto.
In a statement signed and made available to the public on Monday, by Abubakar Bagudu, technical advisor of the managing director, the authority explained that the dam has exceeded its storage capacity of 943 million cubic meters due to the significant entries of the main tributaries.
“This development was caused by the recent violation of the Kankiya dam in the state of Katsina, as well as heavy rains in the collection areas.
“To protect the structural integrity of the dam and avoid potential disaster, SRRBDA announced that water release has risen 300 cubic meters per second to 550 cubic meters per second.
“It is strongly recommended to the public, particularly the farmers and the critical interested parties along the downstream communities, which are kept away from the banks of the river and the low areas. The immediate evacuation of proximities is necessary to avoid the loss of lives and properties,” reads the statement.
The statement also revealed that the managing director of SRRBDA, Alhaji Abubakar Malam, had previously committed to keeping interested parties regularly informed about water management plans.
The authority assured that it will continue to provide timely information and guidance to safeguard the communities of any unpredictable incident.
