The head of the Popular Party of Nigeria (NNPP), Buba Galadima, warned that Nigeria runs the risk of sliding in the civil war if the federal government continues with an alleged plan to appoint a controversial judge of the Court of Appeals retired as president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking in an interview in Arise News on Monday, Galadima claimed that the administration was considering installing a recently retired judge with what he described as “a record of notoriety” to head the electoral body.
“In November, there are rumors in all the place that this government is paying attention to a judge of the Court of newly retired Appeals that is known for notoriety to be the president of INEC. I would like it not to be true. Because if that man becomes the president of INEC, he is sure that this government is inviting a civil war in this country,” he said.
The unconditional of the NNPP accused the current administration of not showing any consideration for the rule of law, adding: “Then it can see that this government does not respect the rule of law. And we cannot be in a country where the government does not respect the law.”
He also extended his criticisms to the current leadership of INEC, claiming that he has already been committed in favor of the ruler Congress of all progressive (APC).
According to him, “the president of INEC has already manipulated the elections for APC. They brought someone who is the secretary of the party who went to the Court for APC as an interim national president, and was rewarded with the president of INEC.”
Galadima argued that such movements threaten the credibility of the Nigeria electoral system and warned about the serious consequences if the alleged plan materializes.
“If this man is appointed president of the INEC, then forget the elections in Nigeria. Because there would be no elections in this country, and will create chaos,” he said.
Asking for surveillance among the Nigerians, he declared: “We cannot allow someone who has a notoriety record to impose us as president of INEC.”
