Akwa Ibom’s state commissioner for local government and headquarters, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, has urged traditional rulers throughout the state to take the initiative to mobilize their subjects for the registration exercise of current voters, such as the general election approaches of 2027, warning that poor participation could prevent democratic representation.
Archibong made the call during a courtesy visit to the Council of Traditional rulers of the state of Akwa Ibom in Uyo on Wednesday, where he emphasized that monarchs, such as custodians of peace and culture, should also serve as mobilizers for civic responsibility.
“The participation so far is discouraging. Our real parents, as voices respected in society, must assume the task of encouraging eligible voters in their domains to register. This is the only way we can build a truly representative democracy,” said the commissioner.
He praised traditional rulers for their constant support for the administration of Governor Umo Eno, noting that their cooperation has contributed significantly to peace and stability enjoyed in the State.
“This support for the governor has been remarkable, and I am sure it will continue. We must support it in all ramifications, 360 degrees,” said Archibong.
According to him, the survival of the state arising from the State depends on each sector from performing its part, with the traditional institution occupying a fundamental role in the configuration of society. He recognized the pressures faced by monarchs in their daily duties, but urged them to see the voter registration campaign as a duty for posterity.
Archibong also linked the exercise with the political and economic future of the State, emphasizing that the highest voter registration would give Akwa Ibom a stronger voice in national politics. “The numbers are important in a democracy. If our people are not registered, we will lose the force that comes with collective participation,” he added.
While recruiting support for the registration of voters, the commissioner warned against what he described as the “abuse of culture and tradition” by people who exploit him for antisocial activities. He cited incidents of online insults aimed at leaders, including the governor, and the recent case of a masquerade that assaulted a citizen.
“The government will not bend its arms while the culture armed against people. Tradition should be a unifying force, not an instrument of abuse,” he warned.
In addition, he accused the monarchs of using their influence to promote harmony, civic duty and respect for constituted authority, noting that such efforts would reinforce the ongoing development programs of the government.
Archibong also appealed to real parents to throw their weight behind the preparations for the celebration of the state anniversary on September 23, describing the event as a tribute to their role of custodians in history and inheritance.
He reaffirmed that the administration of the Governor Umo, grants a high premium to the traditional institution and hopes that he will continue as a partner to consolidate development profits for present and future generations.
