The highest bridge in the world has officially opened to traffic in the province of Guizhou, southwest China, transforming trips through the mountainous region.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon bridge, which rises to 625 meters above the Beipan River, was inaugurated on Sunday morning after three years of construction. The project reduces travel time in the deep cannon of almost two hours to just two minutes.
Party almost nine times higher than the Golden Gate bridge of San Francisco, the structure covers 2,890 meters with a main period of 1,420 meters. Authorities say that it now has the record as the oldest steel thick beam hanging bridge in the world in mountainous terrain.
The bridge extends through the Grand Canyon of Huajiang, often known as “La Crack de la Earth”, and is the last milestone in the ambitious expansion of China’s infrastructure.

According to Zhang Yin, head of the Provincial Transport Department, the project is a “historical achievement” that shows China’s innovation. It incorporates 21 patented technologies and multiple advances in wind resistance and the construction of great altitude.
The engineers exceeded the challenges of the cannon by implementing advanced tools, including drones, satellite navigation, intelligent monitoring systems and ultra high strength materials, achieving precision at the millimeter level in construction.
Guizhou, one of the least developed provinces in China, is known as the “World Capital of the Bridge”, with more than 30,000 bridges built in its injured land.
The province houses almost half of the 100 highest bridges in the world, and the combined length of its full bridge projects and now exceeds 5,400 kilometers, almost equivalent to the distance from China to the north to south.
