US President Donald Trump has warned that his administration will suspend all aid and assistance to Nigeria if President Bola Tinubu’s government does not address growing attacks on Christians across the country.
In a post on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump accused the Nigerian government of allowing what he described as “murder of Christians.”
He alleged that radical Islamist groups have been attacking Christian communities in different parts of Nigeria, insisting that Washington could be forced to intervene if Nigerian authorities continue to look the other way.
He wrote: “If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the United States will immediately suspend all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well enter that now-disgraced country, “shot down,” to completely eliminate the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.
“I hereby instruct our War Department to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be quick, cruel and gentle, just as terrorist thugs attack our beloved Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
Online tribune reports that Trump had designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” saying Christianity in the country faces an existential threat.
He claimed that thousands of Christians have been killed by radical Islamist groups and called for an immediate congressional investigation into the crisis.
Trump maintained that the United States would not stand by as Christians in Nigeria and other parts of the world face persecution, insisting that the United States remains willing to defend Christian populations globally.
