President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday sent the names of 32 nominated ambassadors, including 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors, to the Senate for confirmation.

The development comes just days after the president unveiled the first group of three nominees.

In two separate letters to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nominees without delay.

This was revealed in a statement by his special advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, four women are on the list of career ambassadors, while six women are on the list of non-career ambassadors.

A ambassador is an official representative of a country who is appointed to live in another nation or in an international organization to manage diplomatic relations. Ambassadors serve as the primary liaison between their home government and the host country and may be career or non-career ambassadors.

While the reactions continue after the nominations, Online tribune discusses five key distinctions between the two categories.

Appointment process

Career ambassadors typically advance in the Foreign Service based on merit, seniority, and career progression; Non-career ambassadors, on the other hand, are politically appointed by the president and can come from any field.

vocational training

Career ambassadors receive formal diplomatic training and ongoing professional development; Non-career ambassadors may not have specialized diplomatic training.

Years of service

Career ambassadors typically have decades of experience in diplomacy, international relations, and foreign posts; Non-career ambassadors cannot have prior diplomatic service or foreign posts.

Job security

Career ambassadors have long-term careers within the Foreign Service structure; Non-career ambassadors generally serve only during the administration that appointed them.

Diplomatic experience

Career ambassadors have technical experience in negotiation, protocol and foreign policy; Non-career ambassadors rely more on their professional background, experience in public service, or political roles.

Key phrase: Non-professional ambassadors
