United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has appointed Emmanuel Nnorom as the group’s new chairman following the retirement of Tony Elumelu.
Nnorom, who has served as a non-executive director on the bank’s board of directors since 2024, will officially take up the role on August 21, 2026, after Elumelu steps down at the end of his tenure, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines.
Here are 10 things to know about the incoming UBA president:
He was born in 1958.
Born Emmanuel Nwabuikwu “Emma” Nnorom on April 7, 1958, he is one of Nigeria’s experienced corporate executives, with a career spanning banking, investments and corporate management.
Studied at Oxford
Nnorom attended Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.
He is a public accountant and banker.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
He has more than four decades of corporate leadership experience.
Nnorom has spent more than 40 years working in banking, finance, auditing, operations and corporate governance. During that time, he held executive and board-level positions in some of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions and companies.
He worked in several Nigerian banks before UBA.
Nnorom held senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank (now UBA), Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank. His responsibilities covered finance, operations, planning, risk management, information technology, human resources and regulatory affairs.

He rose through the ranks at the UBA
Before joining the UBA board as a non-executive director in 2024, Nnorom spent more than eight years in the bank’s executive management. During that period, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer (Group Executive Office), Chief Executive Officer (Finance), Chief Executive Officer (Risk) and Managing Director/CEO of UBA Africa.
Led UBA’s African operations
As managing director/CEO of UBA Africa in 2013, Nnorom oversaw the bank’s operations in several African countries, helping to strengthen UBA’s pan-African presence.
He also served as president and chief operating officer of Heirs Holdings.
Prior to moving to Transcorp, he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Heirs Holdings between January and August 2014, helping to drive the group’s investment strategy in key sectors.
Previously headed Transcorp
Between September 2014 and May 2017, Nnorom served as President and CEO of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp), where he oversaw the company’s businesses in energy, hospitality, agriculture and energy.
He currently runs Heirs Holdings
Nnorom has been the group chief executive of Heirs Holdings since June 2017. He oversees the investment company’s businesses in financial services, energy, healthcare, hospitality, real estate, energy and technology.
