Ahead of Wednesday’s official date for the start of the presidential and National Assembly election campaigns, the National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) held a meeting on Monday.
At the end of the meeting, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Felix Morka, briefed journalists and assured the faithful that the APC would soon unveil a detailed campaign programme.
According to the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), August 19, 2026 is the official date for the start of the campaigns of the candidates for presidential and National Assembly positions, with the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Campaigns for the governorship and state Assembly seats are scheduled to begin on September 9, 2026, while elections have been set for February 6, 2027.
The APC spokesperson maintained that the party would carry out thorough consultations before continuing with its national campaign.

He said: “August 19 is the date set by INEC for all parties to start the presidential campaign and for the National Assembly. There is no law that says we must start on that day. The only thing is that no political party can start before that day.
“The party is drawing up a comprehensive and well-thought-out national campaign calendar after necessary consultations with critical stakeholders and affected candidates.
“There’s no law that says we have to start on Wednesday.”
