A scholarship recipient from the graduation ceremony of the UBA Accelerated Graduate Management Program was detained in the middle of the greeting by the Group President Tony Elumelu after she addressed him simply as “Tony”.
In a video of the event, the trainee is heard saying, “Good morning, Tony,” as he addresses the businessman.
At first, Elumelu seemed to take the greeting lightly and responded, “Toyin? Toyin?”
When she clarified that she had said “Good morning, Tony”, Elumelu told her that he preferred to be called “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE”.
“Okay. No, you won’t call me Tony. I’m not… you’ll call me Mr. Elumelu or TOE. You won’t call me Tony or President. I don’t subscribe to that kind of… Oyinbo life, okay?” said.
The woman then corrected herself by saying, “Good morning, Mr. Elumelu,” before continuing with her question.

The exchange has since sparked reactions online, with some netizens questioning whether addressing Elumelu by her name was disrespectful.
