2027: Adeleke’s visit signals broader rainbow coalition for Tinubu – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike says political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections will produce a “broader rainbow coalition” in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wike spoke on Friday in Abuja during an inspection of ongoing projects in the FCT, while reacting to the recent visit of the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to President Tinubu.

The Minister described Adeleke’s engagement with the President as an indication that a broader political alignment is forming ahead of 2027.

“What happened last night is a meeting to rebuild a bigger rainbow coalition. And he (Adeleke) is supporting Mr. President. He is in a different party; I support Mr. President and I am in a different party. So, it is a bigger rainbow coalition,” Wike said.

He predicted more defections and alignments in the coming weeks.

“And in the next few weeks, look what’s going to happen. You’re going to see a larger rainbow coalition in this country supporting Mr. President,” he said.

Wike dismissed the idea of a formidable opposition before 2027, arguing that the current political landscape lacks a clearly defined leading opposition party.

“When you say opposition, I have told you that I don’t know what you call opposition; as far as I am concerned, there is no opposition now,” he said.

He said the PDP, which should normally lead the opposition, had been weakened by the internal crisis.

“Normally it should have been the PDP, but because of the crisis we have had, you cannot see a formidable party to call the main opposition party,” he added.

Reacting to claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that he helped Adeleke win the Osun governorship, Wike said: “All those ADCs who talk about ‘they helped Adeleke win’, they just wanted to go and reap where they never planted.”

He also downplayed possible reactions from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the NDC’s Peter Obi to his engagement with Adeleke.

“What you have are people who are just trying to see if they can be relevant,” he said.

Wike said the project inspection was aimed at ensuring that key infrastructure scheduled for completion this year was delivered on time.
