Gospel singer Asu Ekiye has announced that his 28-year marriage to his wife, Kunemofa, has ended.

The singer, popularly known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”, shared the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Ekiye and Kunemofa married in 1998 and have four children together. He said the marriage ended in 2025, but did not indicate what led to the separation.

Explaining his decision to talk about it now, Ekiye said he needed time to accept the end of the marriage.

He wrote: “After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a deep sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end. Some chapters, however significant and memorable, eventually come to an end.

“I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, as I look forward to the possibilities of a new season. For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended one year ago. I have deliberately chosen to make this announcement only now, after allowing time to bring the perspective, clarity and calm acceptance that such a deeply personal transition deserves.”

The announcement has since attracted attention online, with many people reacting to the news of the singer’s split after nearly three decades of marriage.

Ekiye had previously spoken about his relationship with Kunemofa in a 2018 interview with Punch.

He explained that they did not have a conventional dating period before getting married. Instead, he said their relationship developed from a strong connection between them.

According to the singer, their dreams aligned, their spirituality merged, their intellect agreed, and their chemistry cooperated when they met.

Ekiye also recalled how he proposed to Kunemofa on the street. He said she was very excited when he asked her to marry him, but it ultimately took him two weeks to give her the answer.

Speaking about her qualities, Ekiye described Kunemofa as a special woman who had many of the qualities he wanted in a wife. These included beauty, spirituality, concentration, intelligence, motherhood, initiative and ingenuity.

He also referred to her as a true companion during their years together.

Ekiye gained greater recognition after releasing his 2001 hit song, “Woekilemo.”

He later added several songs to his gospel music catalogue, including “Eniye”, “Dey by My Side”, “Seiyo”, “Miyebibo”, “Kareyo” featuring Eben, “Ebikamo” and “Yemiyemo”, among others.
