The bishop president of the Redimged Evangelical Mission (TRM), Mike Okonkwo, has noticed that governments alone cannot address the security challenges in Nigeria without the support of the churches.
Okonkwo announced this at the giant Killers 2025 conference, organized by Reverend Yomi Kasali, founder of the Foundation of the Assembly of Truth (Fota), in Lagos, to commemorate its 20th anniversary.
The bishop said that although it is the duty of the Government to protect people, the churches must be associated with the government to address the situation.
On the challenges in Nigeria, Okonkwo said that at all levels of government, those who could not perform should give up their positions and allow the most capable hands to take care.
“There is no need to buy the position you are not doing,” he said.
Okonkwo emphasized that the government only cannot handle the challenges of insecurity, which have become a national concern.
He said that although security is the responsibility of the government, the Nigerians and the churches must join to resolve the situation.
“The only way the church can help is to associate with the government and speak where there is insecurity, and not try to hide behind the curtains,” he said.
Also speaking, the founder of Revival Assembly Ministries International, Madubuko, said the church needs to pray for leaders to wake up from their responsibilities.
“The church is supposed to be the strongest due to Jesus, but we have continued to the other side. Like Bishop Okonkwo said, our responsibility is to grow in the knowledge of Jesus.
“And it is this knowledge that builds us. Then, when the Church begins to grow in this knowledge, the Church will have its mojo again.”
On security, Madubuko said that prayers are necessary for God’s intervention.
“There is nothing that one can do about it. Just prays for God to wake up the people of service and that everyone is in their duty position.”
Also speaking, the convener, Reverend Kasali, said the government could do much more to address insecurity in the country.
He loaded the Church to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
“The same thing we have said over time, that the Church is the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that we should be able to impact our nation and our communities.
“At this time we have the largest churches in the city, the largest shepherds, the largest ministries, but our impact does not feel firmly in our society.
“It is important for us to try as much as possible to let our impact feel beyond the buildings and beyond the big names. And that is what Bishop said, and I really agree with that thought and that opinion.
“As giant murderers, we believe that there are always problems in each nation, and we should enter there with courage.”
According to Kasali, the Nigerians must wait and believe that they are David, and the Goliats in this nation face, but they can be shot down.
“Faith, integrity, honesty, faith in the Word of God, faith in everything we believe, and we should have faith in this nation. Have faith in Nigeria again. Whatever facing us as a nation, we can tear it down with a stone and a tyrachinas.
“The Church is a moral institution, and we hope that the Church, its leaders and its members can go out and become salt, not only sugar. Thus we can have a positive impact on this nation.
“The government can do much more. They are trying, they are making the effort, but I know they can do much more. They are doing everything possible and performing their part, but I think they can do much more.”
Also speaking, Mr. Kasali’s wife, Funke Kasali, said that part of the program was to seek God’s face and intervention in Nigeria’s affairs.
“As a wife and mother, the murder of innocent Nigerians breaks my heart.
“The victims of kidnapping, murder, rituals, bandit and theft could have been anyone.
“He is disgusting and sad, and we are tired of it.
“We need a total system review. Parents must play a role in the education of their children and instill values, while schools and churches should help children retain those values,” he said.
Other shepherds waiting at the conference include Felix Omobude, Ayo Oritsejafor, Funmi Boulah Johnson, Bidemi Mark-Mordi and Tolu Odukoya.
The program is expected, which formally began on Wednesday night in the church auditorium in Surulere, ends with a Thanksgiving service on Sunday.
