… warns that external actors with hidden motifs are not used
Police Inspector (PGI), Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria police force under its surveillance to address the difficult situation of retired officers under the contributory pension plan (CPS).
When addressing the former officers harmed at the headquarters of the Force in the capital of the nation, Abuja, on Monday, Egbetokun expressed empathy for their situation, stating that the question of bad retirement benefits was also a concern to serve the officers.
IGP Egbetokun revealed that he had just come from a meeting with the national security advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, where the welfare of retired police officers was also discussed.
The PPE, however, warned retirees who do not use them for external actors with hidden motifs.
On the demand for the police to leave the contributory pension plan, he clarified his position on the matter, insisting that he does not oppose the idea.
He said: “We all feel worried. We tied with you because we are also going to retire. I have been involving the highest level to ensure something to improve the condition of the poor pensioner.
“Even at this time, it only came from a meeting with the NSA. The issue is the poor pension of the retired officers. There are things we must do to ensure that their suffering in retirement is relieved.
“There are several things that we have done, steps that I have been taking, whose details I would not like to reveal with the present press. But I just want to assure you that we tied with you and that we are not only folding our arms. We are doing a lot to make sure something is done.
“Do not allow police enemies to use it. Suspect those who intend to be on your side. They may not mean you.
“I do not oppose your departure from the CPS. I do not oppose it. If leaving CPS will solve the problem, I will do it. But if it is difficult for us to leave CPS, what else can we do? We have been stirring the departure of CPS during the last 11 years, it has not worked.”
IGP EGBEKUN also declared that, although past administrations have made efforts to get the CPS police, the process has proven to be beyond the powers of any individual general inspector.
