The International Gas Union (IGU) has announced the appointment of Mr. Akachukwu Nwakedi, president of the Nigeria Gas Association (NGA) as Regional Coordinator of Activities and Initiatives of IGU over the African continent.
The appointment was held at the World Group Conference (WGC) in Beijing, China, recognizing the important contributions of Nwakedi and the NGA to the advance of gas as a catalyst for energy safety throughout the continent while reaffirming the leadership position of Nigeria in the gase industry of Africa.

In this strategic role, Nwakedi will be the main link between the members of the IG and the Africans, ensuring that African perspectives are effectively represented in global discussions of gas policies.
Their responsibilities will include advocating policies that support the development of natural gas throughout the continent, facilitating the transfer of knowledge among the stakeholders of the industry, coordinating regional events to promote collaboration and provide a critical analysis of regional developments to inform the global strategies of the IGU.
Nwokedi assumes this position after the exemplary service of Eng. Khaled Abubakr of Egypt was the regional coordinator of the IG for Africa and the broader Middle East, until its recent election as vice president of the IGU for the period 2028-2031. This transition marks a critical moment for the growing influence of Africa in global energy governance.
“The appointment represents both an honor and a deep responsibility. It recognizes the leadership of Nigeria in the African gasoline sector while providing an important platform to advocate for sustainable energy solutions that will boost economic development in our continent. I hope to strengthen collaboration between African nations and the global gase community,” Nwakedi said.
