The vice president of the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives, the representative Saidu Musa Abdullahi, asked the Federal Government to recognize and declare the first day of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar, as a holiday.

The representative Abdullahi, in a statement signed by his main legislative assistant, Dodo Mustapha Alhaji, congratulated the Muslims in Nigeria and beyond at the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1447 AH.

He praised the governors of Niger, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Osun, Oyo and Sokoto to constantly declare Muharram a holiday in their states in recognition of their spiritual importance.

The legislator, therefore, urged the federal government to take the example of these states and replicate the gesture at the national level.

He said: “In a multi -religious nation, recognizing the dates of religious importance for all important religions, encourages unity, strengthens mutual respect and reinforces a sense of belonging among citizens.”

According to him, the celebration of the Islamic New Year is a moment of spiritual renewal, reflection and commitment to the noble values ​​of sacrifice, perseverance and mercy demonstrated by the prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions during the hijrah.

He asked the Nigerians to use the Islamic New Year as an opportunity to pray for peace, demonstrate compassion and join around the collective objective of national development.

The vice president of the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives reiterated his commitment to promote inclusive policies and legislative actions that defend Nigeria's rich religious and cultural diversity.
