Sergio Rico

Paris Saint-Germain’s Spain goalkeeper Sergio Rico, who is Keylor Navas’ substitute, has taken a 180-degree turn from his decision to leave the club, the French champions announced on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, a two-time Europa League winner with Sevilla and who also spent a season on loan at Fulham, landed in the French capital from the southern Spanish club on a temporary contract with an option to buy.

But he only played 10 games for PSG, in particular he came in as a replacement in the 2-1 Champions League quarter-final victory over Atalanta and then began the 3-0 semi-final victory over Leipzig, in the one that Navas was left injured.

A day after PSG’s 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, Rico announced that he was leaving.

But PSG said on Saturday it was “delighted to extend Sergio Rico’s contract with the club after reaching an agreement on a permanent transfer with Sevilla.”

The deal runs through June 30, 2024, raising questions about the future at French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola’s club, back in Paris after a season on loan at Real Madrid.
