Nigerians celebrate democracy on the foundation laid by Abiola

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast and believe in the ongoing democratic process in the country.

He said this during Democracy Day celebration prayers held at the family home of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola in Gbagura, Abeokuta.

The governor stated that his administration will continue to honor the legacy of the late Abiola, especially since he was an outstanding son. He added that his administration will also not relent in delivering the dividends of democracy to the good people of the state.

While commending the federal government for implementing people-oriented policies with the ultimate goal of achieving a better Nigeria, Mr. Abiodun called on Nigerians to continue supporting the government and its bodies to achieve the desired dividend of democracy.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, noted that Nigerians were celebrating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy on a foundation laid by the late Abiola. He commended the government for setting aside the day not only to honor his memory but also to celebrate democratic governance in Nigeria.

At the beginning of his sermon, Daud Toriola, an Islamic scholar, described MKO Abiola as “food and drugs” because of the role they both played in the body system, and said that although he is no longer around, the lives he touched in life still speak. of its impact. .

Toriola also praised the state government for playing a leading role in remembering the late business magnate and philanthropist even before the federal government began immortalizing him.

Speaking on behalf of the family of the late Abiola, Ameen Abiola, thanked everyone for coming annually to remember their late patriarch, especially the state government for its unwavering support and the recent renovation of the family home.

He also thanked the Federal Government for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day and for honoring the late Abiola, saying the gesture goes a long way in protecting the legacy left behind.
