Nikita Pearl Waligwa, 15-year-old star of the Queen of Katwe is dead


Nikita Pearl Waligwa, the actress, star of the film Queen of Katwe, about a chess prodigy from a poor neighborhood in Uganda, is dead.

Nikita, 15, had a brain tumor. She was first diagnosed in 2016.

Queen Katwe's director Mira Nair reports the BBC, mobilized funds for her treatment in India, after Ugandan doctors said they did not have the necessary equipment.

Nikita received a positive evaluation report in 2017, but in 2019 it was discovered that she had another tumor.

The 2016 film, which he presented, was based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who started playing chess despite being out of school and then competed in international tournaments.

Nikita played the role of Gloria, a friend who explained the rules of chess to Phiona.

Lupita Nyong’o played the role of Phiona's mother and David Oyelowo as their chess master.
