The Lakes Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on Friday deployed a task force to implement strategic operational measures aimed at addressing the accumulation of aquatic algae, popularly known as water hyacinth, around the Ikorodu axis.
The move is part of proactive efforts to prevent the threat from disrupting boating and other river activities in coastal communities.
The NIWA team, supported by heavy equipment such as swamp devils, harvesters and other relevant machinery, has commenced preliminary clearance operations around Ebute Ikorodu and Ikpakodo Ferry Terminal.
The exercise aims to ensure waterways remain navigable and free of obstructions caused by invasive aquatic weeds.
Eng Sarat Braimah, Lagos Area Director of NIWA, explained that the deployment of the task force is a preventive measure designed to ensure the smooth movement of goods and passengers through the waterways of Ikorodu, an area that often experiences recurrent water hyacinth infestations.
“We have carefully studied the pattern and spread of the water hyacinth phenomenon and have decided to act quickly to mitigate its impact before it causes disruptions to ship and ferry operations,” said Eng. Braimah.
“Beyond transportation, we are also aware of the effects on local fishing activities. The sooner we address the problem, the better. My boss, the Director General of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has awarded a contract to address the water hyacinth menace across the country to ensure smooth movement of goods and passengers. I will be personally on the ground throughout the week to monitor the progress of the operation by of the contractors,” he added.
