High-flying Rivers United FC technical advisor Stanley Eguma said on Thursday that fatigue was responsible for the team’s loss to Bauchi’s Wikki Tourist FC on Matchday 4 of the 2020/2021 Nigerian Professional Football League ( NPFL).

The club’s press officer, Mayuku Charles, in a statement in Lagos, quoted Eguma as saying that the players were tired, having spent long hours on the road from Port Harcourt to Bauchi, the venue for the match.

“After the game, we played on Sunday, we had a terrible time traveling to Bauchi.

“We had a hectic period because fatigue was central to our loss today.

“Maybe because of the breakdown we had on the road on our way.

“But I think the players did their best; we lost today, but we still have other games to play.

“We are going to correct our mistakes and work on the problem of fatigue,” Eguma said.

The statement added that Chinedu Udeagha’s goal in the 29th minute from a well-taken free kick was enough to ensure that Wikki Tourist emerged victorious in a close match at Bauchi’s Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa Stadium.

“The 2020/2021 NPFL season is only four days old, but the battle for the title is starting to flare.

“Eguma made six changes from the team that had beaten Kwara United on Sunday.

“Lookman Binuyo left the bench and Kunle Odunlani stepped forward to make his first league start with the club,” the statement reads in part.

The experienced utilitarian player got into the center of midfield and got into the “hole” that Binuyo usually occupies.

Regaining Fortune Omoniwari was also included as a substitute.

“This game has seen very few goals in recent years and this one followed suit,” said Charles. (YAYA)
