As the Nigerians join the rest of the world to commemorate International Workers Day, the President of the Union of Nigeria journalists (NUJ), the Federal Council of Capital Territory (FCT), Comrade Grace Ike, on Thursday praised the arduous work and dedication of workers, while requested greater freedom of the press and improved working conditions for journalists.
In his message on May, Ike addressed the struggles that many workers face, particularly journalists, as a result of the current economic situation. This year's issue echoed: “claiming the civic space amid economic difficulties.”
“Workers' Day is not only a moment to honor the value of work, but also a time to commit ourselves to protect the civic space, a space where each voice is important, where the truth is defended and where rights are respected,” he said.
Comrade Ike highlighted the difficult times that Nigerian workers are lasting, citing the growing cost of living, labor insecurity and limited opportunities. She warned that these challenges not only affect people's livelihoods, but also threaten the fundamental freedoms that support democracy.
“The media play a vital role, now more than ever. Journalists must continue talking, hold the leaders and protect the voices of vulnerable,” he said. “We must defend freedom of the press, go back against censorship and fight for the right treatment at work.”
He also asked all sectors (government, private employers and civil society) to support workers by promoting better work environments.
“Let's not allow these economic struggles to erosion our rights or silence us,” he urged. “On the other hand, let our shared difficulties join us in the construction of a more just Nigeria where each worker has a genuine opportunity to prosper.”
As the first woman to direct the Council of Nuj FCT, Comrade Ike concluded her message with a strong attraction for unity and collective action.
“On this workers' day, I call everyone, from the government to employers, to be with us. We protect our freedoms, invest in our people and transform the sacrifices of workers into real progress for our country.”
