The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as “Amotekun Corps,” said yesterday that it arrested 4,000 crime suspects in five months.
Ondo State Corps Commander Adetunji Adeleye, who revealed this to Newslodge yesterday in Akure, noted that the crime rate in the state has dropped by more than 70 percent.
He said the suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape, robbery, illegal possession of firearms, child trafficking, cultism, to human relations violations, among others.
He said, “On average, between January and May 2022, we have made about 4,000 arrests, and through the Ondo State Director of Public Prosecutions office, we have been able to send a reasonable number to Correctional Centers and prosecutors. . are occurring, while diligent investigation is occurring in others.
“Comparatively, the last five months of 2021 and the first five months of this year, we have seen a very marked decrease in the number of suspects arrested.
“Just in maintaining law and order on the open grazing lawbreaker line, we arrested close to 4,000 last year, but this year we haven’t arrested as many as 1,000.
“Furthermore, comparatively as well, virtually all forms of criminal activity are on the decline in the state. Unlike before, when kidnapping was a daily problem, it is no longer as rampant as it was within the metropolis. Even in border cities, it is now becoming a thing of the past.”
Describing it as part of the agency’s historic achievement, Adeleye promised that the agency would not relent in its Operation Cleanup efforts to eradicate crime in the state.
He added that the successes were recorded in collaboration with the men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Civil Defense and Security Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army (NA).
