The candidate for governor of the new Popular Party of Nigeria (NNPP) in the elections of Governor of November 16 in the State of Ondo, Edema Hon Olugbenga, has resigned from the party, citing poor leadership and betrayal as reasons for his departure.
In his renunciation letter, addressed to the president of the NNPP in Mahin Ward 11, area of ​​the local Government of Ilaje, Edema declared that his departure from the party has immediate effect as of May 9, 2025.
According to him, the internal dispute within the NNPP is detrimental to the perspectives of the party and prevents winning elections, saying that I had never found a more disorganized and treacherous political platform. “Without a doubt, lessons have been learned,” he said.
He said: “Since he joined the match in June 2024, NNPP has been characterized by internal wranglings and rancor that have crowded their growth. This is not healthy for any serious part over the winning elections.
“NNPP leadership frustrated my judicial case by withdrawing it in favor of APC. This is a betrayal.
“Clearly, the objective of the party is not aligned with the values ​​of any serious political organization.”
The resignation of Edema followed the dismissal of a lawsuit he had filed, challenging the result of the primary election of the Congress of Progresistas (APC), which Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa produced as a party candidate.
However, the Federal Superior Court and the Court of Appeals in Akure was taken into account after the NNPP, the Plainta del Case in the case, unexpectedly retired from the procedures.
The appeal courts ruled that the withdrawal caused the lawsuit to be ineffective and ordered Edema to pay a fine of ₦ 1 million to each of the defendants.
Edema had asked the Court to force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the nomination and publication of the governor Aiyedatiwa and his deputy as APC candidates, citing constitutional motives.
It will be remembered that Edema resigned from the ruling APC before last year's government elections and then emerged as the NNPP governor candidate.
