Governor Umar Namadi, from the state of Jigawa, commissioned parliamentarians and other citizens on Saturday with the need to produce a constitution that remains as a lighthouse of hope, equity and justice for generations but not born.
Governor Namadi, who gave the position during the Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution held in the state of Kaduna, said that the constitutional review in progress provides an opportunity for Nigerians to register their names in the chronicles of progress, justice and national unity.
Represented by the president of the Chamber of the Jigawa State Assembly, Hon. Haruna Dutse described the zonal public audience exercise as a brilliant example of democratic commitment, reflecting the collective resolution to deepen the foundations of good governance and the construction of the nation in Nigeria.
By pointing out that the constitution of a nation is not simply a legal document, he declared: “It is the soul of the country. Encarna our shared aspirations, defines our national identity and establishes the framework for justice, equity and peace. Therefore, a Constitution must continue to be a living document, receptive to changing realities, dreams and legitimate expectations of people who attend people.
“This zonal public audience is really historical because it gives Nigerians the opportunity to speak directly about the process of shaping the supreme law of the Earth. It underlines the fundamental truth that sovereignty belongs to people, and that no constitution can endure unless they have the consent and confidence of those whom it governs.
“Citizen commitment is not just a democratic ideal; it is the basis of legitimate governance. It is only listening to our people that we can really understand their hopes, their anxieties and their vision for the future. The voices of our traditional rulers, civil society groups, professional organizations, young organizations and women, people with disabilities and citizens of the citizens must be heard, respect and reflect at the time of this constitutional review.
“Therefore, I ask all citizens here to actively participate and speak freely, knowing that their contributions are critical to build the Nigeria that we all want, a country governed by justice, equity and inclusion.
“In addition, I want to emphasize that our collective responsibility does not end with these hearings. When the amendments proposed are finally transmitted to the state assembly houses for ratification, I urge all the governors of my colleague, the honorable speakers and the members of the national and state assemblies to ensure that the voices of our citizens continue to guide their decisions.
“Recall that, as leaders, we are simply custodians of trust. We have the privilege of occupying positions today, but tomorrow we will be called to account, both before history and, ultimately, before the Almight Sagrada
“This constitutional review is an opportunity to register our names in the chronicles of progress, justice and national unity. Let's take advantage of this moment with conviction, knowing that the decisions we make today will shape the destination of millions, not only in our time but in the coming generations.”
While it is emphasized that the trip to build a stronger, more united and more prosperous Nigeria demands courage, wisdom and sacrifice, urged all citizens to address the process with open minds, mutual respect and an unwavering commitment to the common good.
