The South and Medium Leaders Forum (SMBLF) criticized the Federal Government on Thursday and the National Assembly on the failure of its constitutional responsibilities in the protection of the lives and property of Nigerian citizens amid insecurity throughout the country.
The SMBLF also condemned the growing avalanche of violence and bandit, especially the continuous genocidal attacks in the middle belt region, saying that persistent murders, kidnappings and displacement of indigenous communities indicated that both the Executive and the legislative have failed in their main duty.
This was contained in a statement issued at the end of a SMBLF emergency meeting in Abuja, which described the government's inability to stop the atrocities of terrorists as direct incompetence.
The SMBLF, in its statement signed by a leader of AFENIFER, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Middle Belt Forum, DR Bitrus POGU, OHANAEE social disintegration.
The statement said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria and particularly the National Assembly must now accept its inability to provide the most fundamental security of life and property throughout the country, while we witness the impunity of Fulani's terrorists and their foreign collaborators who destroy genocidal attacks in indigenous communities throughout the nation and particularly in the Bint Middle Belt region in Benue.
“For the umpteenth time, SMBLF asks the president and the National Assembly to amounts to his constitutional responsibility and duty to protect the life and ownership of the Nigerians as we propose as follows:
The SMBLF also condemned the proposed establishment of a national forest guards scheme by the federal government, which describes as an attempt to impose additional federal security structures within the states.
He declared: “That SMBLF condemns the national forest guards as an additional federal security structure in the States and requires that all institutions or security formations apart from the armed forces, the police, civil defense and state security services must be part of the security architecture of the states, more as lands and forests are constitutional preparators of the federal states.
“That restructuring pending full right towards true federalism, the governments of the states of the Federation must take immediate measures to provide security to their people in the nature of the Amotekun South West security network with the complete complement of weapons to face and deter insurgency and terrorism.
“That these security measures are considered more effective than the current unitary architecture in a federation that makes governors as the main security officers of their states only.”
