Benue Police Command on Wednesday said a middle-aged man was burned to death by angry youths while trying to snatch a motorcycle in Makurdi.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Catherine Anene, said this in a telephone interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Makurdi.
Anene, who said the victim was burned beyond recognition, said the motorcyclist beat the alleged thief and raised the alarm, prompting the young man to run to the scene and set it on fire.
The police spokesman, while condemning the act, said the identity of the alleged thief could not be determined, as he was burned beyond recognition.
However, a witness told the Nigerian News Agency that the deceased had shot the motorcyclist, but that the latter escaped the bullet.
The eyewitness said it was the gunshot that caught the attention of the young man, most of whom were Okada horsemen, who hotly pursued him, caught him on the old Otukpo road near the Bobec Hotel and set him on fire.
