There was palpable tension in Ewu-Ekiti, the Ilejemeje local government of Ekiti state on Friday night when the community’s traditional ruler, the Elewu of Ewu Ekiti, Oba Adetutu Ajayi narrowly escaped death when suspected gunmen bullets were fired at his car.

The monarch was said to have suffered gunshot wounds and is now hospitalized at an undisclosed medical facility in Ekiti state.

A source told reporters in Ado Ekiti on Saturday that the monarch was traveling in his official car to neighboring Ayetoro Ekiti, in the local government of Ido / Osi, when the gunmen attacked.

“The monarch was on his way to Ayetoro when the bandits attacked him and in an attempt to escape they chased him and threw a hail of bullets on his car.

“The bullets hit him in the legs, arms and stomach. The traditional ruler is now receiving treatment at a tertiary hospital in Ekiti, ”the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, ASP Sunday Abutu, regretted that the incident occurred despite rigorous joint patrol, raiding of blackheads, and combing of forests by his men to evict criminals.

Abutu said that the Police Commissioner, Mr. Babatunde Mobayo’s directive that the combined forces of the police, the Amotekun Corps, the Vigilance Groups, the Local Hunters, the Chiefs, the Drivers Union, the motorcyclists, the Farmers and other stakeholders should carry out a joint operation, it was being watched diligently at the same time in all 16 local government areas when gunmen attacked.

“The objective of the operation was to evict and apprehend the criminals in their hiding places as ordered by the Police Commissioner.

“But unknown gunmen maliciously defied the operation, came out and attacked the Elewu of Ewu, Oba Adetutu Ajayi while in transit between Ewu-Ekiti and Ayetoro-Ekiti around 7:00 pm.”

Abutu added that the PC assured the public that the perpetrators will be put on the books, promising that the command will continue to work with security teams, ministries, stakeholders and relevant organizations to ensure that the crime is removed from Ekiti.

The police spokesman stated that the spirit of the commando officers and other agencies and support groups remains high as the operation continues indefinitely to take down the bandits in Ekiti.
