Pamela Warner, mother of the late Malcolm-Jamal Warner actor, has shared new details about the tragic death of her son in July 205, breaking her silence for the first time since her death.
Warner, better known for his role as Theodore Huxtable at the Cosby Show, drowned on the coast of Costa Rica in July.
According to the police, Warner, who was 54 years old at that time, was taken to the coast by a voluntary lifeguard and another surfer, and the Forensic Pathology Department then ruled his accidental death.
In an exclusive interview with Good Morning America Co-presenter Robin Roberts, Pamela Warner revealed that her son was caught in a hangover while swimming with a friend. She emphasized that Warner was not an experienced swimmer.
“They were in the water, maybe to the chest,” he explained. “There was a hangover and my son did not know how to deal with that.”
He also clarified reports that his son drowned as he tried to save his daughter. “I was on the coast. He was not in the water,” he said, adding that Warner’s friend, a stronger swimmer, was also caught in the hangover, but managed to rescue himself.
Remembering the moment he learned of the death of his son, Pamela said he let a cry “from the bottom of my soul”, describing the pain as “indescribable pain.”

Despite the loss, he said that he has found peace: “That was his time. That was the way he was going to make the transition, and this is what I believe and feel.”
Pamela added that his son wanted to be remembered for his work beyond the Cosby show, pointing out the deep conversations they shared throughout his life. “I am very grateful that he has been chosen to be his mother. Our trip together as a mother and son was complete.”
Warner is survived by his wife, tennisha, and his daughter. Pamela said they are still deeply, with her daughter especially traumatized after witnessing resuscitation efforts on the beach.
On September 12, Tenisha published on Instagram for the first time since Warner’s death, sharing a wedding photo while thanking his friends and fans for his support while marking his wedding anniversary.
Since then, Pamela has created the “MJW Living Legacy” page to honor his son’s memory and urged the public to “love where you can, give when you can and be better”, a message that said reflects what Warner defended.
