The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has requested associations to address emerging humanitarian challenges, including disasters related to climate, armed conflicts and mass displacement in the state of Anambra.
Prof. Charity Emelie, president of the NRCS Anambra branch, made the call on Saturday in Awka during the celebration of World Red Cross Day of 2025, with the theme “next to humanity.” World Red Cross Day is celebrated every May 8 to mark Henry Dunant's birthday, the founder, and to honor staff and volunteers who promote humanitarian principles and values.
Emelie said: “Some of the main humanitarian challenges in Anambra include insecurity, natural disasters such as floods in eight areas of the local government, displacement of individuals and erosion.
“The Red Cross Society is drawing the attention of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the interested parties relevant to these rural areas and disaster prone to the State where the needs of life are missing.
“This call to action is necessary due to the fact that humanitarian challenges are increasing at an astronomical rhythm, while financing is decreasing.

“We ask your support to help us remain continuously on the side of humanity,” he added.
Emelie also praised volunteers for their dedication, support and disinterest in the service of humanity in the state.
Also speaking, Eng. Kingsley Okoye, secretary of the branch, said that society distributed hygiene and sanitary items to 400 women and girls affected by the flood disaster of 2024 in the state.
He added that relief articles and cash were also distributed to 1,100 homes in response to flood disaster.
“Some of these interventions were supported by donor agencies, such as the Department of Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection of the European Commission (ECHO).
“The scale and complexity of the current crises demand a united action. No actor can only administer these challenges alone, hence the call to associations and support.
“We will continue to be the first aid responder number one in the state. We urge the public to call our lines in case of emergency,” he said.
Okoye appreciated the state government and the Nonyeye Soludo Healthy Living initiative for its continuous support for society.
