TikTok has temporarily banned Nigerian users from livestreaming at night, with the restriction extending from 11pm to 5am daily.

Many users said that the ban not only prevents them from conducting live sessions but also prevents them from watching live streams from other countries.

According to affected users, all live features have been limited and TikTok issued a system notification to explain the measure.

“We are temporarily limiting LIVE to late night hours in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains secure and our community protected,” the notice said.

One user said: “I woke up to an official system notification and the LIVE button completely disappeared.”

Others also reported that they were unable to live stream in other regions.

The late-night restriction is believed to be linked to increased reports of inappropriate content during late-night live sessions. The move has also slowed participation during those hours, impacting people who rely on live streaming for income.

Some Nigerians reportedly misused the live feature by hosting adult-themed sessions in which viewers sent gifts, raising concerns about security and moderation.

Recent reports from TikTok highlight the scale of law enforcement on content. In its Q1 2025 moderation data, the company said it removed more than 3.6 million videos from Nigeria between January and March 2025 for violating community rules.

In the second quarter of 2025, TikTok banned 49,512 live sessions in Nigeria.

Globally, it has acted on over 2.3 million live sessions and over 1 million creators for guideline violations.
