A doctor in the United Kingdom abandoned a patient at a table of operations under anesthesia to have sex with a nurse in another room, has heard a medical court.
Dr. Suhail Anjum, 44, and the unidentified nurse were caught in a “compromising position” by a “shocked” colleague at the Tameside hospital in Greater Manchester.
According to the BBC, the incident, which occurred in September 2023, came to light during a physical aptitude to practice the audience after Dr. Anjum, who had been living in Pakistan, requested to resume work in the United Kingdom.
He did not challenge the evidence presented against him by the General Medical Council (GMC) and admitted that his behavior had been “shameful.”
The anesthetist consultant had told colleagues that he needed a “comfort rest” and asked another nurse to monitor the male patient in the middle of the surgery. Instead, he went to another operational theater in Ashton-Indander-Lyne, where he had sex with a woman identified as nurse C.
Andrew Molloy, who represents the GMC, said that the colleague who entered them had been “shocked and quickly walked through the theater to the exit doors.”
Dr. Anjum, who was absent for about eight minutes, then returned to complete the procedure. Molloy confirmed that “no damage to the patient occurred when Dr. Anjum was absent from the theater and the procedure continued without more incidents.”
The nurse discovered the couple informed the matter to their line manager.

During the audience, Dr. Anjum admitted to having participated in the sexual activity with nurse C and acknowledged that their actions could have put the patient at risk.
He said he knew that she “probably would be close” when he left the operational theater.
Dr. Anjum told the service of the doctors who wanted to resume his medical career in the United Kingdom, describing the incident as a “trial error.” Giving evidence, he said: “It was quite shameful, to say at least. I just have to blame.”
He admitted having disappointed colleagues and NHS Trust, adding: “I offer my sincere apologies to all those involved and I want the opportunity to correct this.”
The doctor said the incident occurred after a “stressful time” for his family, when he and his wife were fighting “to connect as a couple” after the premature birth of his daughter.
