A woman who worked as a psychiatrist of the National Health Service (NHS) for more than 20 years using a false medical qualification has been ordered to pay more than 400,000, or in front of an extra time after bars.
Zholia Alemi, 62, of Burnley, was used throughout the United Kingdom after forging a medical grade certificate from Auckland University in New Zealand. Despite never completing the required degree of medicine and the Bachelor of Surgery, it was registered as a doctor by the General Medical Council (GMC).
He denied 20 charges, including falsification, but was imprisoned for seven years in 2023 after being convicted of a jury at Manchester Crown Court.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecutor's Office (CPS) said that he must now pay £ 406,624 in compensation for NHS or face another two and a half years of prison, stating that he had “deceived the public bag.”
Alemi forged a degree certificate and a verification letter in 1995. The court heard that the word “verify” was even bad in the documents, but the GMC accepted them.
The Court was told that Alemi had received more than £ 1.3 million in NHS salaries despite never having the appropriate medical qualifications.
Adrian Foster of the CPS said: “We have solidly pursued the crime product with the NHS fraud authority and we have identified all the assets that you have available to pay your order.”
He continued: “Alemi had little consideration for the well -being of the patients. She used forged medical qualifications of New Zealand to obtain employment as a NHS psychiatrist for 20 years. In doing so, she should have treated hundreds of patients when she was not qualified to do so, which could put these patients at risk.”
During the sentence, Judge Hilary Manley requested an investigation into how the GMC accepted documents that were “clearly false.”
Alemi had previously lived in High Harrington, Cumbria, and was imprisoned for five years in 2018 for forging the will of an 84 -year -old woman. That fraud would have seen it inherit the Keswick Women's House and £ 300,000.
After his conviction in 2018, the GMC admitted that his controls in the 1990s were “inadequate” and launched an urgent review of some 3,000 foreign doctors working in the United Kingdom.
