The United States Supreme Court announced Monday that it will listen to a republican challenge to federal limits on campaign spending, a case that could have radical implications for the mid -period elections of 2026.
In the center of the case, the Federal Elections Commission of NRSC v. Federal is a matter of whether the government can legally limit the amount of money that political parties and campaign committees spend in direct coordination with their candidates.
Republicans argue that these limits violate the first amendment.
The court will listen to arguments in its next term, which begins in October.
If the judges govern in favor of the Republican committees, the decision could significantly expand how much parties can spend in support of individual campaigns, which potentially remodel the financial panorama of the US elections.
In a joint statement, the president of the National Committee of the Republican Congress, Richard Hudson, and the president of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Senator Tim Scott praised the Court's decision.
“The government should not restrict the support of a party committee to their own candidates,” they said.
“These coordinated expenses limits violate the first amendment, and we appreciate the decision of the court to listen to our case. The coordinated expense continues to be a critical part of the winning campaigns, and the NRCC and the NRSC will ensure that we are in the strongest position possible to win in 2026 and beyond.”
According to current law, the limits of expenses of the coordinated parties for 2025 vary from $ 127,200 to $ 3,946,100 for Senate candidates, depending on the population voting age of a state.
For candidates for the House of Representatives, the limit is $ 127,200 in states with a single district in general and $ 63,600 in states with multiple representatives.
These figures reflect the limits established by Congress under the Federal Electoral Campaign Law, which the Republican committees now say they are outdated and unconstitutional.
