The Mexican senators faced Wednesday after a tense debate about the alleged opposition required by the United States military intervention against drug cartels in a physical altercation.

The confrontation broke out when Alejandro Moreno, leader of the PRI party of the opposition, approached the podium at the end of the session to challenge the president of the Senate Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the MORENA ruling party for denying the floor.

In a video shared by the Senate of Mexico on social networks, Moreno is seen pushing Fernández Noroña several times, hitting him on the neck and hitting another man to the ground while trying to intervene.

According to CBS News, the fight occurred after a heated exchange in which the PRI and PAN opposition parties were accused of supporting US military participation in Mexico, an accusation that both parties rejected.

After the incident, Fernández Noroña announced that he would file a complaint against Moreno for bodily damage and seek to eliminate his legislative immunity.

“The debate could be very hard, very bitter, very strong … today when (opposition legislators) are exposed for their betrayal, they lose their heads because they were exposed,” he said.

Moreno, however, accused Fernández Noroña to instigate the fight, writing on the social media platform X: “He was the one who began the attack; he did it because he could not silence us with arguments.”

“The first physical aggression came from Norona,” Moreno added. “He threw the first push, and did it with cowardice.”
