Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, jokingly asked: “When will our own juju be updated?” after taking a driverless Uber ride in Atlanta, United States, and watching the car move without a human driver.
AY shared a video of the experience on his official Instagram account on Sunday, showing himself inside the vehicle while driving without a human driver.
Reacting to the technology, the comedian compared it to what he described as some of the practices associated with Africa, asking when the continent’s own “juju” would advance.
He wrote: “I got into Uber in Atlanta… in Jaguar, but no driver! Oyibo doesn’t use technology to make the engine propel itself. Meanwhile, for Africa, our jazz na turns people into yams. When our own juju updates? See you at #enish_restaurant tonight in Houston.”
In the video, AY can be seen using his phone to unlock the vehicle and begin the journey. He then expressed astonishment when the car moved with no one behind the wheel.

He said: “When oyinbo tell one to tell them not to be a couple, Una goes, they follow, they argue, follow them, they argue.”
The comedian went on to point out that the vehicle was self-driving and linked the development to his previous comments about technology and traditional practices in Africa.
“Look, the car drives itself. This is not my super. And they load me up and leave. They don’t tell anyone to say not to be a partner and they don’t want to hear the word that they are going to make juju. They do different things, they kill people for Africa. I don’t want juju, that will kill people.”
AY also explained how he started the trip using his phone and noticed that he was traveling alone without a driver.
He said, “I opened the car with my phone. I started the trip with my phone. And here we go. On my birthday. So we’ll be there in four minutes, basically. Alone. No driver. We’ll be there in four minutes.”
