The Federal Government has reintroduced Nigerian history as a mandatory issue in the National Basic Education curriculum to “promote national identity, unity, patriotism and responsible citizenship among Nigerian young people.”
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, declared this in Abuja on Wednesday in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo.
He explained that the new curriculum was designed to rekindle pride in Nigeria’s past, nourish civic consciousness and equip students with the knowledge and values ​​necessary for the construction of responsible nations. Alausa also expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for defending the reform under the renewed agenda of hope.
“For the first time in decades, Nigerian students will study Nigerian history continuously from Primary 1 to Junior Secondary School 3. Students in SSS 1–3 will learn the newly developed civic and heritage studies of the subject, which integrates the history of Nigeria with civic education. This innovative approach ensures that students understand the history of the nation while growing the values ​​of citizenship citizenship Citizenship, “according to the minister.
Why FG reintroduces the story in the Basic Education Curriculum: Alausas added that students in Primary 1–6 will be taught the origins, heroes and heroines of Nigeria, traditional rulers, cultural heritage, political evolution, geography, environment, economy, religions, colonial administration and governments after independence.
For JSS 1–3, the Civic and Patrimonial Study Curriculum will cover the first Nigerian civilizations, pre-colonial states, Western Africa, Trans-Saharan trade, European contacts, amalgamation, movement of independence and democratic governance, combined with civic values ​​to strengthen national unity.

According to him, the reform represents “an invaluable gift for the nation”, reconnecting children with their roots while inspiring pride, unity and commitment to the development of Nigeria.
The Ministry has published the reviewed curriculum and will collaborate with interested parties to provide resources, train teachers and strengthen monitoring and evaluation to guarantee their success.
