In a dramatic turn for the ongoing developments within the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the former governor of the State of Rivers, Nyesom Wike, made a surprise appearance at a meeting of the forum of High Risk PDP governors in Abuja on Sunday.
The appearance marked the first in the months in the midst of high tensions and defections that balanced the opposition party.

Wike's presence is particularly surprising given its central role in the Breakaway G5 faction and its continuous alignment with the Federal Government led by APC, a relationship that has generated questions about its loyalty to the PDP and fed the rumors of its eventual desertion.
However, on Sunday, he sat among his previous and current colleagues, causing speculation of a possible highlight or recalibration of his political strategy before 2027.
The meeting, chaired by the state governor of Bauchi Bala Mohammed, brought together six governors of the PDP and dozens of former state directors of state directors under the party platform. Present were governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Adela Adelek (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter MBAH (ENUGU) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). The Governor of the state of Akwa Ibom, Umo Eno, who also rumored that he leans towards the APC, was remarkably absent.
Wike arrived at 9.23 pm, while his G5 allies, former governors Sam Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (ENUGU), were already sitting with other interested parties.
Its presence indicates a possible coordinated return to the party dialogue despite the past fractures.
The fifth member of the block, Governor Makinde, has continued to be a bridge between the two camps.
Sunday's meeting arrives at a critical moment for the PDP, which is struggling to maintain cohesion against recent high profile defections, including that of Delta's state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and a massive exodus of party leaders in the state. The situation has triggered the alarms in the rows of PDP, with fears that the party can unravel if urgent measures are not taken to rebuild trust and unity.
Wike's decision to attend the meeting can be part of a broader repositioning within the PDP, since political realignments accelerate before the 2027 general elections. Although it has not publicly renounced its ties with the administration led by APC or insinuated to return completely to the PDP fold, its presence was widely seen as a sign that it is not closing the door in the future commitment within the future commitment.

According to the reports, the discussions in the closed doors session focused on strategies to stop the mare of defections, reposition the PDP for the next electoral cycle and resolve internal long -standing disputes, among them, the Wike's current dispute with the national party leadership after the consequences of the 2022 presidential primary.
Although no official statement had been released at the time of publication, the sources within the party described the presence of Wike as “encouraging” and potentially “that the game changes”, particularly if it leads to the reintegration of its powerful block in the main matters of the party.
With 2027 on the horizon and the APC and the Labor Party intensify its internal restructuring, the PDP seems to be recalibrating its own machinery.
It remains to be seen if Wike's return to the table marks the beginning of reconciliation or simply a tactical movement, but for now, the party may have bought a crucial life line.
