The tension increased on Sunday in Akure, the capital of the state of Ondo, after a confrontation between the agents of the State Police command and the staff of the State Security Network, also known as Amotekun's body.
The police officers of the Scorpion Unit broke into the position of Amotekun's body in the Ijoka of Metropolis of Akure, where they took a suspect that had been arrested and was under the custody of the body.
According to the sources, a complaint had been filed on a missing motorcycle in Amotekun's office, which led the body's staff to arrest the suspect, Tosin Adebisi, 18, in his residence, where the stolen motorcycle was also recovered.
One of the sources revealed that shortly after Amotekun agents made the arrest, the police personnel of the Scorpion Unit arrived and demanded that the suspect was discharged under his custody. However, the body decreased, insisting that the suspect would only be released at its headquarters in Alagbaka.
According to the reports, the situation became a heated confrontation, which turned out that the shots shot in the air and the tear gas boats that detonate, and the police finally took the suspect by force.
The incident caused panic and interrupted normal activities in the Alagbaka area of ​​the state capital, since residents fled a fear. Some amotekun agents supposedly were injured during the confrontation.
When reacting to the incident, the Public Relations officer in the State, Olayinka Ayanlade, declared that police officers were the first to reach the scene before Amotekun's staff, which were accompanied by a large number of commercial motorcyclists.
He said: “In a disorderly and similar way to a command, Amotekun's staff and accompanying people took the suspect custody and exhibitions, in the process hurting a police officer.
“After this, the Police Commissioner, Ondo State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, immediately ordered tactical commanders to recover both the suspect and the exhibitions.
“Subsequently, after the intervention and dialogue led by the commanders of both agencies, the suspect and the exhibitions were returned to the police in the spirit of cooperation between agencies.
“However, it should be declared that although the matter was being solved friendly, some harmed members of Amotekun's body, discontent with the liberation of the suspect, began to shoot sporadically in the air.”
