The Lagos State Police command confirmed the arrest of Inspector Obi Modestus, the officer captured in a viral video physically assaulting an Uber driver.
The images, widely circulated on the social media platform X by the user Oyindamola (@dammiedammie35), shows the officer repeatedly hitting the driver in a way that has generated a generalized indignation.
Oyindamola subtitled the publication, “a new video of Nigerian police violently assaulting an Uber driver. Please spread this video, this is the father of someone who is hitting as an animal.”
When reacting to the incident on Monday, the spokesman for the command, CSP Benjamin Hundyin, declared that Inspector Modestus has been convened by the complaint response unit, CRU, of the Lagos Police Command and will be transferred to the Provost department for disciplinary acts.
Hundyin emphasized zero tolerance of the command for misconduct, adding: “The Lagos State Police command, under the leadership of the CP Owohunwa Jimoh, will not tolerate any form of incivility to the members of the public.”
