The Hollywood actor, Luke Evans, has shared frankly who contemplated suicide when he was a teenager before leaving gay, revealing the emotional cost of growing in a religious environment that did not accept his identity.
Evans, known for his roles in Beauty and The Beast and the Fast & Furious franchise, appeared on the great weekend of Alison Hammond, where he returned to visit his childhood home in Wales and reflected on the isolation he felt during his training years.
“I felt very isolated,” Evans told Hammond, explaining that being raised as a Jehovah's witness, where homosexuality was condemned, did not leave him with anyone who to trust.
He shared that he was intimidated and lacked self -confidence, worsened by the fact that everyone around him, including his friends, were also Jehovah's Witnesses.
“I didn't talk to anyone until I was 14.
Evans described to know from a very early age that something about him was different.
“I knew it was different, I didn't know it was gay, I knew it was different from seven, eight, nine, very young. He had no one out of religion to trust or ask what was wrong.
“I had been baptized in religion and that meant that if I decided to be openly gay, they interrupted me from everyone and everything I knew. It was very complicated and very confusing,” he said.
When Hammond asked him if he had ever found himself in a dark place, Evans responded honestly.
“Oh, yes … in my adolescence. It was clear in my mind who I was and had no one to talk to. It was a very difficult position, place to be. I contemplated suicide.
“It's not a good place to be, especially at that early age,” he added.
Despite these struggles, something deep inside prevented him from happening.
“I think that because I thought that, what am I missing if I do this? What life have I not discovered yet, that I have to live?
“And I think it was necessary to know how my life would be once all this ended,” Evans shared.
The emotional episode also presented lighter moments. Evans led Hammond Horse Riding, drifting tribute to his fast and furious character, and an performance in which he showed his song talents. Towards the end of the 48 -hour experience, he introduced Hammond to his partner in the long term, Fran Tomás.
When asked what attracted Tomás, Evans said: “Nothing phase. It makes me calmer, what I sometimes need. I juggle with many dishes.
“And we are a good team.”
