The Governor of the State of Edo, on Monday, Okpebholo, on Tuesday commissioned a team of experts in the environment and hydrology to plead the flood control strategies implemented by the administrations of Godswill Akpabio and Nyesom Wike in the states of Akwa Ibom and Rivers, respectively.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that the governor's decision aims to address the challenges of perennial floods that face Edo, particularly in Benin, the state capital.
According to a statement issued by the head secretary of the governor, Fred Itua, the initiative underlines the pragmatic approach of Okpebholo governance, which is based on learning from proven models and replicating proven solutions that have delivered results in other places.
“The models of the Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, widely recognized for transforming some of the most prone areas of Nigeria floods into states with efficient flood management systems, are represented as credible planes of what is possible in the EDO state.
“With the rainy season already leaning towards its peak, the time of exercise is strategic. It provides experts with a unique opportunity to observe and evaluate the true reach of real -time floods in Benin City and other vulnerable parts of the State.
“The approach will focus on understanding the terrain, the existing drainage infrastructure and the recurrent inflammation points of overflow and erosion.
“The technical team of four companies will carry out comprehensive feasibility studies and environmental evaluations aimed at designing a permanent and sustainable solution for the flood problem of Benin City.
“His findings and recommendations will be presented to the governor for an exhaustive evaluation and subsequent implementation,” said Itua.
The statement revealed that private and commercial buildings built along the river roads will be demolished to pave the path for adequate surface and underground drain systems, particularly in the government reserve areas (GRAS) in Benin.
Itua said that owners with verified documentation will be compensated by the Government, while others will be relocated in safer areas.
“The bold and multifaceted flood flood control project of the governor throughout the state capital will begin after heavy rains, and the project will be completed in any distant time.
“The Government undertakes to ensure that this process is not cosmetic or politicized, but is driven by empirical data and a genuine concern for the safety and well -being of residents Edo.

“Unlike the intervention of the last administration that was tarnished by mismanagement, half execution and the diversion of funds under the appearance of erosion control, this new initiative will be comprehensive, transparent and aimed at the delivery of a permanent solution.
“The governor has made it clear that there will be zero tolerance for corruption or cosmetic solutions. Each Kobo destined for the projects will be counted and directly directly towards its planned purpose: the protection of lives, properties and the environment,” added Itua.
He said that the governor remained unwavering in his promise to make Benin and his surroundings more resistant, habitable and economically viable.
“This bold intervention is part of its broader development agenda to reposition the state of EDO as a modern urban infrastructure model and environmental planning in Nigeria.
“The era of seasonal floods, paralyzing communities and threatening livelihoods in Edo is coming to an end.
“The administration of Governor Okpebholo is taking firm measures to offer a future in which residents will no longer live with fear every time it rains.
“The people of Edo can expect a new life opportunity marked by proactive leadership and receptive governance,” he concluded.
