Grammy -winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has publicly withdrawn her criticism prior to Afrobeats, offering an apology and clarifying that her controversial comments never intended to undermine the genre.
Speaking during an interview in the official Afrobeats Afrobeats program with Eddie Kadi, Burna Boy explained that his previous comments derived from a desire to distinguish their sound, not discredit.
“I described my music as Afro-fusion because it seemed that there was no room for her at home, so I had to carve my own niche.
“I didn't understand why everyone wanted my music in a single box. I didn't know we needed a term umbrella to bring our music worldwide. If I had understood that, I would have approached it differently,” said Burna Boy.
The singer had received criticism in 2023 during an appearance at the Apple Music Zane Lowe Lift Show, where he declared that Afrobeats lacked lyrical substance. The statement caused a generalized reaction from fans and industry experts equally, many of it accusing it of missing the respect for gender that promoted African music to the global stage.
Now, Burna Boy admits that these comments were made of a place of limited understanding and were misunderstood.
“Why would I want to destroy what I am building?” asked. “I apologize for confusion.”
In addition, he recognized the unifying power of Afrobeats, describing it as a vital vehicle that has raised African music internationally.
“I realize the role that Afrobeats has played to put us all on the map. I respect that now more than ever,” he concluded.
The artist's renewed position indicates a commitment to unity within the African musical community and a deepest appreciation for the genre that continues to inspire millions worldwide.
