The Bauchi State Police Command says that the alleged murder of a soldier by a police officer attached to a mining company at a control point in the Futuk community, the Alkaleri local government area is investigating the alleged murder.
Police spokesman Sp Ahmed Wakil told reporters on Friday that the police commissioner, Sani Aliyu Omolori, has requested calm as security agencies jointly investigate the incident.
Wakil cited a report on an online platform (not Daily Post) that declared that the late soldier, master’s degree (MWO) Ali Haruna of the 33 artillery brigade, was shot on August 25 while trying to stop a truck suspicious of transporting illegally mined minerals.
The truck, with the Gombe 676-Blg registration number, supposedly refused to stop, taking Haruna and his team to follow him.
The report claimed that when the truck was intercepted, Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, a mobile policeman, opened fire against Haruna, hitting him in the stomach. He was urgently taken to the Gombe Specialist Hospital, but died of the bullet wound.
Wakil said the report was misleading, adding that the first findings showed that the truck belonged to Guruje Mining Company Limited and Zurfi Company Limited, which have valid licenses to undermine lead and zinc in Gwana, Alkaleri Lga.
He explained that Inspector Ibrahim was officially assigned to provide security to the staff and operations of the companies.
Wakil added that the Police Command and Military Police of the Nigerian army have formed a joint investigation team to discover the real cause of the incident.
“The research will be exhaustive, professional and aimed at guaranteeing justice,” Wakil said.
