The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), the state branch of Akwa Ibom, has asked governments of all levels that prioritize local pharmaceutical production to address the growing cost of medicines and reduce import dependence.
Speaking during the commemoration of World Pharmaceutical Day 2025, the state president of ACPN, Pharm. Tony Anderson said the collapse of the Jubileo Jubileo Manufacturing Company in Onna highlighted the urgent need to strengthen indigenous pharmaceutical industries.
He stressed that viable local production would guarantee the sustainable availability of essential medicines, create jobs and increase income generated internally.
According to him, the dependence on imported medications, aggravated by the recent output of multinational companies such as Glaxosmithkline, has deepened health challenges for Nigerians, noting that establishing facilities for the production of local vaccines and developing traditional medications in line with global best practices for health safety.
Pharm. Anderson welcomed the approval of the pharmaceutical consultants by the Federal Ministry of Health, describing it as an expected reform that would strengthen pharmaceutical services and optimize patient care throughout the country. He urged state governments to quickly adopt and implement the picture to raise practice standards and improve therapeutic results.
The President of ACPN emphasized that pharmacists remain at the forefront of the Nigerian health system, fighting counterfeit medications, providing patient advice and guaranteeing access to safe and affordable medicines.
He averaged the preparation of the association to collaborate with governments and interested parties at all levels to advance in the practice of the pharmacy, safeguard public health and improve the provision of medical care.
“As we celebrate this day, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguard public health and the advancement of the pharmacy for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Anderson said.
