The Oyo State Police Command has stated that it has mobilized more personnel to protect the ancient Oyo National Park.
This was made known by the State Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, during an on-site assessment at the park on Wednesday.
Newslodge reports that a report emerged on Wednesday morning that some people had been killed in the park.
Haruna, who led other police officers to the park on Wednesday, confirmed that the gunmen had killed five rangers.
The CP in a statement made available to Newslodge through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, noted that the attack was directed at the rangers.
He added that police officers who mobilized immediately saved the situation.
He added that the measure was made in order to prevent new attacks by the aggressors.
Haruna also revealed that the area commander, DPO Ikoyi division, tactical teams and other officers have been tasked with moving to the scene.
He added that they will be there to secure the area, protect and collect evidence.
The police chief maintained that preliminary reports indicated that the attackers, about twelve (12), emerged from some nearby bushes and attacked the park.
He said: “Following the tragic attack on the National Ranger Office in Oloka village through Ikoyi-Ile, Oyo State, which occurred yesterday, January 6, 2026, at about 11:30 p.m., claiming the lives of five (5) officers, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, CP Femi Haruna, immediately carried out an on-site security assessment of the affected area.
“Immediately after receiving information about the attack, the CP deployed all available agents and operational resources in the area, thus preventing further attacks by the attackers and avoiding a possible breakdown of law and order.
“The Area Commander, DPO Ikoyi Division, Tactical Teams and other officers were tasked to move to the scene, secure the area, secure and gather evidence. The remains of the fallen officers have since been respectfully deposited and the site was forensically swept to collect all available evidence.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers, numbering about twelve (12), emerged from the adjacent bushes, opened sporadic fire at the ranger office and fled the scene.”
