A trailer fully loaded with rice caught fire on Thursday on the Numan axis of the busy Numan-Yola highway in Adamawa State, causing a heavy traffic jam in the area.
Witnesses said traffic was stopped for two hours along the highway, a major problem considering that the Numan-Yola highway is a key link between virtually the entire Adamawa State and the rest of the country.
One of the witnesses, Adamu Bappa, who helped put out the fire, said it took considerable effort and time for the surrounding villagers to unload the rice amidst the thick smoke from the burning trailer.
Bappa added that he and the other volunteers were able to recover about 400 bags of rice from the approximately 500 bags the truck was carrying.
