The first lady of Türkiye, Emine Erdogan, has appealed to the first lady, Melania Trump, to lift the voice of the children trapped in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In a letter published by the Turkish Presidency on Saturday, Mrs. Erdogan praised the past efforts of Mrs. Trump to highlight the difficult situation of Ukrainian children during the invasion of Russia, but urged her to “extend the defense” to the children of Gaza and the Palestinians who suffer under the current military campaign of Israel.
“Gaza has become a children’s cemetery,” Erdogan wrote, asking Mrs. Trump to join international efforts to highlight suffering.
“We must unite our voices and strength against this injustice,” he added.
His intervention occurs in the midst of gloomy warnings of food security experts backed by the UN, who say that more than half a million people in the city of Gaza already face the famine, while 132,000 children are threatened by severe malnutrition.
“The phrase ‘unknown’ baby written in the Mortajas of thousands of children in Gazán opens irreparable injuries in our consciences,” said Erdogan, urging the compassion and solidarity of the spouses of the global leaders.
The Turkish first lady asked Mrs. Trump to demonstrate the same sensitivity to Palestinian children that Ukrainian children encouraged her to use her influence to appeal directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the end of the crisis.
Mrs. Erdogan also encouraged Mrs. Trump to appeal directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”
The Turkish first lady generally does not get involved in politics, more often chooses to be active in environmental issues, which has gained praise of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
But Mrs. Erdogan has written letters to the partners of world leaders in the past, in 2016 on behalf of the Syrians trapped in the civil war and condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza in March.
The letter was published following a condemnatory report on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The Integrated Report of the Food Security Phase (CPI) classification confirmed a famine in Gaza City and its surroundings, warning that more than 640,000 people will face “catastrophic conditions” between mid -August and late September.
In Friday’s report, the CPI said that the shortage of particular toll foods had assumed children, approximately one in Gaza is very malnourished.
It also projects that until June 2026, malnutrition will threaten the lives of 132,000 children under five years.
The Ministry of Health led by Hamas has said that 112 of the 273 people who have died from malnutrition are children.
Israel denies that there has been famine in Gaza. It also accuses IPC experts of being biased, changing their methods to evaluate the famine and use data from Hamas. The CPI has rejected this criticism.
The report occurs when Israel prepares to launch a new military offensive aimed at occupying the city of Gaza.
Israel’s army launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the attack led by Hamas against southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people were killed and another 251 were taken as hostages.
At least 62,122 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health of the territory.
Most of the population of Gaza has also been displaced several times; It is estimated that more than 90% of houses are damaged or destroyed; and medical care systems, water, sanitation and hygiene have collapsed.
