Kano's state government has imposed a prohibition of all live political programs on radio and television in a movement aimed at curbing the propagation of inflammatory discourse and safeguarding public order.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a meeting with media executives in Kano.
He said the measure is intended to promote responsible transmission and avoid the misuse of public platforms for abusive or provocative political discourse.
“We are not willing to vomit the media or suppress the political opposition,” Waiya clarified. “Our concern is to defend responsible communication that is aligned with the cultural and religious sensibilities of the state of Kano.”
According to the commissioner, the Government had observed a growing trend of derogatory and abusive language during live political discussions, which believes that it represents a risk to peace and public decency.
To reinforce the policy, the new transmission guidelines now require that all the guests presented in political programs in the state sign a committed company not to make offensive or inflammatory comments. In addition, the presenters have been warned against asking leading or provocative questions that could trigger heated or divisive answers.
Waiya said that the previous commitments with media professionals had already led to a notable reduction in verbal abuse in the air and praised the media for their cooperation.
“This is a collective effort to preserve the integrity of our means and ensure that the dignity of the State is not compromised,” he added.
The state government has also launched a awareness campaign aimed at political commentators, media figures and religious leaders to encourage public constructive dialogue.
