A 46 -year -old window manufacturer who was shot by mistake three months ago by a policeman has been paralyzed.
Having exhausted all their savings and donations of people with a good heart, Charles Mkpang is now attracting help to cover the high cost of his ongoing medical treatment.
It was alleged that the policeman who shot him, identified as Inspector Effiong Bassey, was mentally unstable.
The incident occurred at the Atakpa police station, adjacent to the Watt market, very early on Sunday, March 23, 2025.
According to the reports, the inspector opened fire at the police station, killing three and hurting another four before being dominated. Mkpang was one of the survivors.
Mkpang spoke with journalists with great pain and difficulty, due to a hole in his mouth left by a bullet.
He regretted that the authorities had abandoned him and is struggling to survive.
He revealed that bullet wounds had left him with partial paralysis.
“If I drink water or how, it comes out through my nose. I can't raise my left hand or leg. I am living with pain every day,” MKPANG lamented.
MKPang said that after the initial surgery, he was transferred to a stroke center where he paid N18,000 daily.
According to him, he paid this amount for three weeks, but still suffers complications.
As a result, doctors have recommended that it undergo a second surgery.
Mkpang's wife, a primary school teacher, has also exhausted her savings, and the family now survives in friends' brochures.
According to him, from the incident, the support of the police and the government has ceased.
On how much support he has received from the police whose staff shot him, MKPang explained:
“My wife said the fateful Sunday of the incident when they took me to the hospital, the then AIG police gave him N50,000 and the next day he sent other N100,000 before a woman who said she was a police officer of the command brought N50,000. Apart from that, we have been alone.
“The governor's wife sent me N400,000. Someone called Myckman sent on N500,000. I spent most of these donations in drugs and initial surgery.
“A particular medication costs N42,000 and lasts only a few days.
“I have sent messages to my representative in the State Assembly Chamber, a member that represents the municipality of Calabar, Stanley Nsemo. He has promised to take the matter to the courts, but nothing has passed.
“I have two children. I can't work. I need government help.”
Speaking about the matter, the Cross River police commissioner, Olusegun Omosanyin, said they are pressing so that the state government takes care of their medical invoices.
“The incident occurred before assuming the position of CP, and it was during the time of the old zone 6 of AIG, Aig Bala Mustapha Mohammed.
“We forward the requests of the deceased and the injured to the state government. The government seems to believe its police negligence and, therefore, our responsibility.
“Since then we have dismissed the service shooter and accuse the Court. Currently, it is in preventive detention in the AFOKANG Correctional Center.
“I have supported your invoices with N100,000. AIG's old zone 6 sent its N150,000 to support the treatment.”
