He National Guidance Agency (NOA) has expressed concern about claims of victory at the polls by more than one political party.

NOA Director General Garba Abari said this in Abuja on Tuesday at a breakfast meeting with the media towards post-election stability in the country.

The meeting was organized by NOA in collaboration with International Alert Nigeria.

Abari pointed out that the current situation, in which more than one political party claims victory, holds ominous signs for politics, if not handled delicately.

According to him, it is not uncommon for some to feel dissatisfied after any choice.

“This is so because, in the case of the electoral contest for the office of president, only one candidate can win at a time.

“Our current situation, in which more than one political party claims victory, holds ominous signs for politics if not handled delicately.

“It is in view of the agency’s mandate to build national cohesion that I am organizing this breakfast with the media,” said the director general.

According to him, the meeting is to gain media support for moderation and conflict sensitivity in reporting on events that unfold after the declaration of a winner in the presidential election.

“Let our conversation be cool, conflict sensitive and moderate, so that supporters of various political parties are not incited to violence.

“I have a special appeal to the media. You have a role to play now. Don’t magnify the political narratives that divide our country and our people.

“Democracy is about the competition of ideas and was never intended to produce violent results. Let us all work for the peace that we so desire for ourselves and the generations that have not yet been born”.

Mr. Abari also urged Nigerians contesting the March 11 elections for the state governor and House of Assembly to conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner, to ensure credible elections free of violence.

Paul Nyulaku, Country Director, International Alert Nigeria, said his organization has partnered with NOA to support building debates towards national integration and post-election stability in the country.
